The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) of Nigeria has declared the results of the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for prospective students. Dr. Amos Dangut, the head of WAEC's Nigeria National Office, revealed the findings during a conference on Monday. According to Dangut, 1,814,736 candidates from 25,126 accredited secondary schools around the nation registered for the test. The results of 1,685,889 candidates—or 93.39%—have been fully processed and made public. One or more of the subjects for 119,327 applicants, or 6.61%, are still being processed because of some issues that have been fixed.
He said that attempts were being made to finish the procedure quickly and make the results available to the impacted candidates in a matter of days. Candidates from several schools in Equatorial Guinea, Cote d'Ivoire, and the Benin Republic that adopt the Nigerian curriculum for Senior Secondary Schools are also given the exam. Additionally, 109,115 applicants with various levels of special needs registered for the exam. Of this amount, 473 had hearing impairments, 44 had spastic-cumulative mental disabilities, 38 had physical disabilities, and 145 had visual impairments. The examination was administered with sufficient consideration for each of these candidates. These candidates' results have been processed and are currently being made public alongside those of the other contestants.
As per Dr. Dangut's statement, "The examination statistics analysis reveals that, of the 1,805,216 candidates who took the test, 1,332,089 candidates, or 73.79%, received credit and above in a minimum of five subjects (i.e., with or without English Language and/or Mathematics; A total of 1,301,941 candidates, or 72.12%, received credits in at least five disciplines, including math and English language. Of this total, 628,820, or 48.30%, were candidates who identified as men, and 673,121, or 51.70%, as women. The percentage of applicants in this category in the WASSCE for Schools 2023 and 2024 shows that performance decreased by 7.69% in the WASSCE for this year, 2024.
The head of WAEC announced that due to malpractices, the exam results of 215,267 applicants—or 11.92 percent of all candidates who took the test—would not be made public. He continued by saying that results would likewise be withheld from candidates who were supported by the states and owed the Council money. In his own words: "In light of several documented instances of exam fraud, the results of 215,267 candidates—or 11.92% of all candidates who took the test—are being suppressed. "Compared to the 16.29% reported in the WASSCE for School Candidates, 2023, this is lower (4.37%).
