Skales Slams Nigerian Artists Ignoring Local Media, Calls Them "Ungrateful"
Skales criticizes Nigerian artists for ignoring local media in favor of foreign platforms, calling the trend "crazy" and urging colleagues to appreciate the support of local media in their rise.
Nigerian singer Raoul John Njeng-Njeng, better known as Skales, has spoken out against the growing trend of Nigerian artists ignoring local media in favor of foreign platforms. In a recent appearance on the Listen podcast, Skales labeled the actions of those who bypass local media as "crazy," emphasizing that the local media played a vital role in their success.
He stated, “Any artist that ignores the local media is really crazy because this is our own. Tearing down our own to go build foreigners’ own. Foreigners that don’t care about us.” Skales also pointed out that many artists who are now seeking foreign recognition owe much of their initial growth to local media support.
The singer further criticized some of his colleagues for being "ungrateful," especially those who have benefited from Afrobeats but are now distancing themselves from the genre. “Our artists need to be careful not to tear down what built us because we are trying to impress the world,” Skales added, urging fellow musicians to recognize the importance of their local roots in their global success.
