Netflix Reportedly Buys ‘John Wick in Mumbai’
Netflix has reportedly paid around $30 million to acquire most worldwide rights to Dev Patel’s directorial debut Monkey Man.
According to Deadline, the movie recently wrapped filming, with the very first footage debuting at last week’s virtual European Film Market.
After watching the teaser at the event, one source apparently described the revenge-thriller as being like “John Wick in Mumbai.” The concept is said to have piqued the interest of bidders on the project, though Netflix ultimately won and now plans to release it in 2022.
In the movie, Patel stars alongside Sharlto Copley (District 9), Sobhita Dhulipala (Psycho Raman), and Sikandar Kher (24: India). He plays “an unlikely hero who emerges from prison to take on a world enmeshed in corporate greed and eroding spiritual values, and seeking revenge from those who took everything from him years before.”
The script is said to draw some inspiration from Hindu mythology about the deity Hanuman who is part human, part monkey. It is written by Patel together with Paul Angunawela and John Collee, who previously collaborated with Patel on the 2018 action-thriller Hotel Mumbai.
“I’m so thrilled to be partnering with Netflix on this adventure,” Patel said in a statement. “I hope this will be a fresh addition to the genre at a time in this industry where my story can become our story.
Shooting a film during a pandemic has been quite challenging to say the least, but the opportunity to reimagine stories from my childhood and infuse them with my love of action cinema has been an absolute joy.
Big love to Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee for championing us from the very beginning and Aaron Gilbert and the team at Bron for giving an unproven filmmaker like myself a voice.”
Monkey Man is a co-production between Bron studios, the company behind 2019’s Joker starring Joaquin Phoenix, and Thunder Road Pictures, the producers of John Wick, together in association with Creative Wealth.
The movie is produced by Patel, Thunder Road’s Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee, Jomon Thomas, Samarth Sahni, Christine Haebler, and Anjay Nagpal. Executive producers include Thunder Road’s Jonathan Fuhrman, Bron’s Aaron L. Gilbert, Creative Wealth’s Jason Cloth, Bron’s Steven Thibault, and Natalya Pavchinskaya.
However, before Monkey Man is released, Patel will star in A24’s The Green Knight, David Lowery’s upcoming movie that tells the story of Sir Gawain, King Arthur’s reckless and headstrong nephew, who embarks on a daring quest to confront the eponymous Green Knight. The medieval fantasy film, which also stars Alicia Vikander and Joel Edgerton, will be released in July 2021.
