Desist from Cyber Fraud - Expert tells Kwara youths

Dr. Abdulkarim Oloyede, the acting director of the University of Ilorin's Center for Research Development and In-house Training, has advised young people not to become Internet addicts. While giving a talk with the subject "Gen Z and the Internet: A Blessing or Curse?" Oloyede, an associate professor at the University of Ilorin teaching wireless telecommunication, advised graduating students not to abuse the Internet. During the 34th graduation and prize-giving day of the 2023–2024 graduating students of the University of Ilorin Secondary School, which was held on Tuesday at the institution, the don issued the warning.

While there are benefits and drawbacks to using the Internet, young people should use it responsibly, according to Oloyede, a former student. As the hunger strike continues, protesters bemoan the nation's worsening circumstances.

Some of its benefits, according to him, are advocacy, social change, and the ability to access information and education. On the other hand, there are drawbacks, such as potential hazards, exposure of private information, cyberbullying and online harassment, information overload, and negative effects on mental health. "Your generation is committed to improving the world, and you have a powerful tool in the internet," he stated.

The don also exhorted the youth to be critical thinkers when using the Internet, to double-check information before believing or sharing it, and to question and confirm the reliability of sources. Defend Your Personal Space: Think carefully before sharing any personal information online. A strong password should be used, privacy settings should be enabled, and dubious links and phishing schemes should be avoided.

Establish limits for your internet behavior. Enjoy the actual world, spend time with loved ones, and partake in offline pastimes. Make constructive changes and use the Internet for good. Raise awareness, contribute to causes you believe in, and utilize your online profile to spread compassion and love.

Get Assistance When Needed: Never be afraid to ask for help if you ever feel overwhelmed or badly impacted by something you've encountered online.

Remember that the internet is a tool—a strong one that can be used for good or bad—as you start this new chapter in your life. You, the digital natives, have the power to influence how our globalized world develops in the future. He advised, "Embrace the opportunities it presents, be aware of its drawbacks, and use your special perspective and abilities to make a positive impact on the world."

Dasuki Zainab, a student who scored highly in the 2024 Joint Admissions Matriculation Board Examinations and was named the school's top graduating student overall, was honoured during the ceremony.

According to the school's principal, Alhaji T.N. Durojaiye, Zainab, the assistant head girl for the 2023–2024 academic year, received an offer to study medicine and surgery at the University of Ilorin for the 2024–2025 academic year after receiving 357 score in the JAMB Examinations.

In 2023, 52 students from the school achieved academic excellence in the WAEC and NECO examinations, according to the principal, who also revealed that the school has been performing exceptionally well in public examinations. Insisting that "though there is a need for improvement, we will not rest until our good becomes better while our better becomes best by the special grace of God," he gave the assembly the assurance that the school will make an effort to improve its performance.
