The Nigerian Musician and Actor Falz on yesterday made an announcement yesterday pertaining to #EndSARMemorial and has today posted that those Nigerian citizens who were shot and killed will forever be in their hearts.
If you can remember today marks 365 days since the Nigerian Military allegedly fired upon civilian citizens at the Lekki Toll gate for protesting against the dissolution of Special Anti-Robbery Squad abbreviated as SARS. This SARS was a Nigerian Police Force united who were mandated in 1992 to deal with crimes associated with robbery, motor vehicle theft, kidnapping, cattle rustling and firearms.
However, there were reports that the SARS unit were committing crimes such as shooting unarmed civilians and even armed robbery. The effort to ban SARS started when the Nigerian youth started complaining about the crimes of the SARS. This effort was termed #EndSARS campaign.
The #EndSARS campaign became intensed on October 2020 after SARS police officer shot a young Nigerian man in front of the Wetland Hotel in Ughelli, Delta State. Video of the incident trended on social media, leading to nationwide protests within a few days.
The protests quickly expanded from an online hashtag to widespread street protests in days. Celebrities including Musicians, actors/actresses and social media influencers involved themselves in the protest. As the intensity of the protest grew so did the police brutality. This spiked a worldwide protest where news media all over the world broadcasted the protest.
On the night of 20th October, 2020, protesters merged at the Lekki Toll gate in Lagos, Nigeria and they were fired upon my the Nigerian Armed Forces. There were a lot of casualties that day. Several videos went viral which caught the attention of International bodies. The number of casualties were disputed, with witnesses and Amnesty International saying several people were shot dead while Nigerian authorities claim there were no fatalities but only 25 people were wounded.
The Nigerian rapper, Falz and other Celebs, on this day remembers the souls of those who fell that day. Falz wrote;
