Juventus missed their first two spot-kicks from Paulo Dybala and Danilo with Lorenzo Insigne and Politano converting their respective chances.Napoli started the game on a bright note as Lorenzo Insigne’s free-kick in the 24th minute hit the upright with Gianluigi Buffon completely beaten.
Just before half time, Insigne was on hand again to force a fine save from Buffon after a not properly cleared corner fell kindly for him just outside the 18-yard box. The Biaconeri did not test their opponent’s goalkeeper all through the first period as both teams went into the break with a scoreless draw.
The second half was more open than the first as Napoli picked up from they left off. Insigne could not keep his shot down in the early exchanges. Dybala also found a pocket of space to shoot but his shot went way off target as the match began to open up.
Arek Milik who came in for Dres Mertens had a glorious opportunity to find the back of the net but he could not keep his effort down. Cristiano Ronaldo was anonymous all through the match as the water-tight Napoli defence kept him at bay, he only forced a save from Alex Meret once.
Napoli almost won it at the death as Buffon made a goal-line save from Nikola Maksimovic as the ball was scrambled off the line by the Juve defence to send the match straight into penalties. Napoli deservedly won the match 4-2 on penalties as Gattuso lifted his first trophy as a manger.
